It is possible to catch moles with nothing but a spade and lots of patience. However, most of us simply don't have the time to stand like a statue waiting to smack the critter on the head, so fortunately there are a range of products out there to help. Here, we give you the run down on what you'll need for an efficient trapping operation.
One or more traps

This is the obvious one! Just be sure to get the right type. There are many traps on the market that are difficult to use, completely ineffective, or worse, down-right dangerous to the user, other animals, and children.

There is also a choice between killing traps and humane live-capture traps. See our guide to choosing a trap for more details.
Mole Trap

The probe
Buy HERE
This is needed in order to locate the mole run. The Beagle probe is specially designed to be a comfortable height to use whilst standing. It also has a durable stainless steel bullet shaped tip that will make it obvious when you penetrate a run.

A spade
Buy HERE
This needs to be just the right size. You only want to dig out just enough turf; otherwise you will be causing more damage to your lawn than is strictly necessary. An oversize hole will also diminish the effectiveness of the trap.

The Beagle Digging Spade has been designed with the perfect width blade for use with the EASYSET trap. It has a durable stainless steel head and Ash hardwood handle. Guaranteed for 10 years this spade will last a life-time. The handle is also just the right diameter for tamping down the bottom of the tunnel to a smooth surface, crucial for successful setting of your trap.
Small Digging Spade

A trowel
Buy HERE
This needs to be nice and small so that you can get down into the run and clear out any fallen earth.

Most trowels are too wide, but at 50mm the Beagle Trowel is just right for getting into a mole tunnel and scraping out any debris.
Small Garden Trowel

A tamper
This is section of wooden dowel, slightly smaller in diameter than the mole run. It is great for smoothing out the bottom of a mole run, so that you can leave it just as you found it, except for the trap! This will increase your chances as the mole is less likely to be put off by an obvious intrusion into his run.

Something to kneel on
Buy HERE
Perfect to keep your trousers clean and protect your knees from stones and hard ground. The Beagle Kneeler is made from ultra-comfortable and hard wearing PE foam inside a high quality removable canvas sheath that provides wipe clean protection and a high quality feel.
Luxury Garden Kneeler

A knife / secateurs
This will be useful for cutting through roots or other obstructions that may be found in the tunnel. It is always important to remove these since they may interfere with the operation of the trap. Don't just pull on them since you will likely collapse the tunnel.

Gardening Gloves
Purely for comfort and to keep your hands clean; this is nothing to do with 'smell', a renowned mole catching myth. They are also a good idea if you are going to pick up a dead mole, since they may carry diseases.

Make sure you get a good thick pair, as they will give you the best protection against sharp stones or anything hidden in the soil. A thick pair will also help protect you against the sharp teeth on an angry mole if you are using a live capture trap.

Something to carry it all in
Something to carry all the kit in. For a medium sized garden you will typically need 2-3 traps for a successful campaign. The durable and stylish Beagle Carrybag is the perfect size for carrying and storing your entire collection of mole catching tools and accessories.

Trap Markers
Buy HERE
And, finally, something to mark the traps you have set. This could be anything, from a bamboo cane, to a tent-peg with a visible piece of material tied to it.

A marker is important so you don't lose your traps and also so that others don't accidentally stumble over them, damaging either themselves or the trap.
